Patterns of the plant cover formation in spruce forests after total windthrow were investigated. Natural regeneration censuses have shown that totally windthrown sites have a sufficient amount of undergrowth (7000 pcs/ha) to ensure regeneration of primary spruce stands. Early stages of microsuccession in sites with a disturbed ground cover were found to have little similarity to one another, being characterized by the presence of such true mosses as Ceratodon purpureus, Pogonatum urnigerum, as well as mosses of genera Dicranella and Poiytrichum.
